A Talk by MP Hedy Fry

Details: The Good News Cafe features a series of interesting guest speakers and this month the kick off the season with Member of Parliament for Vancouver Centre Dr. Hedy Fry, who will share highlights from her remarkable career as physician, politician, and activist.

Fry is a Trinidadian-Canadian who is currently the longest-serving female Member of Parliament, having won ten consecutive elections in Vancouver Centre since the 1993 election when she defeated incumbnet Prime Mister Kim Campbell. Fry currently serves as the Special Representative for Gender Issues at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly, and is a member of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development and the Special Committe on the COVID-19 pandemic.

ZUMBA

When: Monday, Sept. 11 from 6 to 7 p.m.
Where: Coal Harbour Community Centre Multipurpose Room.
Cost: Free.
Details: Zumba fuses Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves to create a dynamic workout system designed for all fitness levels. This is a free, no obligation, introductory session to be followed by six weekly sessions for $75.

COMMUNITY CLEAN UP DAY
Keeping the Neighbourhood Litter Free

When: Saturday, Sept. 16 at 10 a.m.
Where: Meet at Gordon Neighbourhood House
Cost: Free. Register here.
Details: Gordon Neighbourhood House, in partnership with the West End Business Improvement Association, hosts West End Community Clean-up events to bring together people who want to help keep our public spaces beautiful. The Community Clean-up event will clean the streets in the West End catchment area from 10 a.m. to 12 noon The event is open to everyone and all supplies will be provided.

𝗖𝗔𝗥 𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘 𝗗𝗔𝗬 ON DENMAN

When: Sunday, Sept. 24 from 12 noon to 7 p.m.
Where: Denman Street from Robson to Davie.
Cost: Free
Details: Car Free Day returns to Denman Street, with six blocks of tents and kiosks featuring food, crafts, community organizations, and live entertainment. The West End event is one of seven Car Free Day festivals in Metro Vancouver, including Surrey and New Westminster earlier this summer, and Main Street, Port Coquitlam, Commercial Drive, and North Vancouver through September.

Denman Street will be closed to all motorized vehicles from Davie to Robson on this day from: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Special notice to residents living on Morton Avenue — a traffic official will be available at See-Em-Ia Lane / Morton Avenue to assist and direct your vehicle across the street during the road closure. All barricades must be moved by a traffic official — please do not move them yourself!

Vendor and entertainer applications closed at the end of August, but organizers are are looking for volunteers to join their team as they work to promote eco-friendly transportation options and a healthier community. Check here to learn more.

HARM REDUCTION & NALOXONE TRAINING
A Workshop That Could Save Lives

When: Tuesday, Sept. 26 from 7 to 8 p.m.
Where: Gordon Neighbourhood House
Cost: Free. Register here.
Details: Naloxone is a lifesaving medication used in response to an opioid overdose. Learning how to use it can be a valuable way to contribute to your neighbourhood’s safety. Overdoses are preventable. Learn about Vancouver’s history of drugs and harm reduction and acquire the essential skills to care for the people in our community. All participants will receive a free naloxone kit.

COMMUNITY LUNCH

When: Mondays and Fridays at 12 noon.
Where: Gordon Neighbourhood House (GNH)
Cost: $7 with a GNH membership, $8 without. Children 1 and up are half-price.
Details: Join other members of our community for a delicious home-cooked lunch. This is one of GNH’s many “Food Justice” programs that you can learn more about here. To reserve a spot call 604.683.2554 or email welcome@gordonhouse.org.

WEST END URBAN GARDEN CLUB
Wild Herbal & Mineral Vinegars

When: Tuesday, Sept. 12 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Where: West End Community Centre Meeting Room 1.
Cost: $22. Free for Seniors 50+ with a $7 materials fee.
Details: Learn how to make an apple cider vinegar and find out why this daily mineral tincture is so important for your hormonal health. The community seed library will be on hand for you to pick up some free seeds for your garden or swap or donate seeds. Fee includes the cost of all materials. Children five and over are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.

INVESTMENT COFFEE CLUB

When: Sunday, Sept. 17 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

PHOTOGRAPHY BASICS IN ONE DAY
For Digital and Film Camera Users

When: Saturday, Sept. 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: West End Community Centre Barclay Room.
Cost: $69.
Details: Learn the basic and most important settings on your digital or film camera inclulding exposure modes, aperture, shutter speed, depth-of-field, white balance, flash, and ISO. This one-day class includes a comprehensive set of class notes and a field trip in the neighbourhood. Please bring a camera with instruction manual, and note that the course is best suited for digital or film cameras with manual exposure control.

  • TOASTMASTERS: Tuesdays, Sept. 12 through Dec. 12 from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. in the West End Community Centre Bidwell Room. Free. Learn and practice public speaking, impromptu speeches, and leadership skills at this weekly meeting.

  • ENGLISH CONVERSATION CIRCLE: Tuesdays, Sept. 12 - Dec. 12 at the West End Community Centre Meeting Room 2. Free. Join a weekly conversation and drop in when you can to practice English in a relaxed circle of friendly people. Conversations are guided by experienced facilitators who strive to talk about things that interest you.

  • WEST END WRITERS: Wednesdays, Sept. 13 through Dec. 13 from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. Free. Writers Club of all ages and experience are invited to join in reading works-in-progress and receiving feedback. Visit here for more information.

  • CRIBBAGE: Fridays from Sept. 15 through Dec. 15 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the West End Community Centre Bidwell Room. Free. A friendly social card group sharing a fun game. Beginners and newcomers welcome. The Dec. 1 class will be in the English Bay Room.

  • LABYRINTH - A WALKING MEDITATION: Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at St. Paul’s Anglican Church Hall. Free. The Labyrinth is a full 13-metre replica of the medieval labyrinth laid in the stone floor of the 13th-century Cathédrale de Notre-Dame de Chartres. The Labyrinth at St. Paul’s is open for silent walking, prayer and meditation to people of all faiths and spiritual disciplines as a resource for meditation, reflection, and prayer.

  • WATERFRONT WALKERS: Saturdays Sept. 9 to Dec. 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Free. A spontaneous group of walking enthusiasts who meet weekly to enjoy a variety of scenic walks. Routes are regularly around 6km and last about three hours, with a stop along the way for coffee. Meet up at Coal Harbour Community Centre.

  • THE DARK SECRETS OF STANLEY PARK: Saturdays from 4 to 5:30 or 6 p.m. $32 adults and $29 youth and seniors. Information and tickets here. Discover the jaw-dropping beauty – and sinister stories – of Stanley Park. Behind those majestic forests, picturesque gardens, and stunning beaches lies a history of forced evictions, buried treasure, shocking crime scenes, and the macabre tale of Deadman’s Island. When you buy a ticket for this walking tour, two percent of the ticket cost goes to support the Indian Residential School Survivors Society.

  • THE REALLY GAY HISTORY TOUR: Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. $32 adults and
    $29 youth and seniors. Information and tickets here. It’s time for Vancouver’s secrets to come out of the closet. Tour guide Glenn Tkach tells the stories of drag kings and two spirit warriors, queer church ministers ,and transgender crime fighters. This two-hour walking tour is a celebration of the unsung heroes who forever changed the social fabric of our city.

MOVIE AT THE MUSEUM
The Woman In Green

When: Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m.
Where: Roedde House Museum

Details: The Movie at the Museum series returns to Roedde House for the fall season with a screening of the 1945 film The Woman in Green, featuring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson, Hillary Brooke as the woman of the title and Henry Daniell as Professor Moriarty. Sherlock Holmes investigates when young women around London turn up murdered, each with a finger severed. Scotland Yard suspects a madman, but Holmes believes the killings to be part of a diabolical plot.

POP-UP ART SHOW & SALE

When: Tuesday, Sept. 12 from 5 to 8 p.m.
Where: Espana Restaurant (1118 Denman)
Cost: Free admission. Artwork prices vary.
Details: The West End’s popular Espana restaurant is hosting a small but colourful three-hour art show and sale featuring works by six artists, including West Ender Sonja Parfitt. A great opportunity to view and purchase works by some local creators.

MUSIC OF THE WORLD
Golden Pearl Ensemble

When: Thursday, Sept. 14 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Where: Roedde House Museum

Details: Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra and Roedde House Museum present a performance by the Golden Pearl Ensemble just ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival on September 29. This traditional Chinese instrument trio will feature Song Yun on the erhu (two-string fiddle), Zhimin Yu on the ruan (four-string plucked lute), and Zhong Xi Wu on the sheng (mouth organ) performing a traditional repertoire. The concert will be hosted by Dr. Gloria Wong (BC Chinese Music Association, Director of Education). Experience the intimate atmosphere of chamber music in the Roedde House Parlour and enjoy a light refreshment in our dining room after for a tranquil autumn evening.

PAINT NIGHT WORKSHOP
An Art From The Hart Event

HEARTY & FARTY
Register Now For The Baking Competition

When: Thursday, Sept. 21 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Where: Gordon Neighbourhood House
Cost: Free
Details: Everyone is invited to celebrate the beginning of the fall season at their Hearty and Farty event, which will include hot apple cider (plus a spiked version for ages 19+) and hearty chili available for sale (hence the name!), live music, line dancing, karaoke, fall-themed arts and crafts, and local artisans. As part of this event there will be an apple-themed baking competition!Register by replying to makaela@gordonhouse.org, calling 604-683-2554, or in-person at Gordon House. Bake a homemade treat with apples as one of the ingredients and bring it to Gordon House on the day of the event at 7 p.m. Hearty and Farty guests will be able to taste and judge the treats during the event. A Book Talk and Wine Tasting

Details: Local true crime writer Aaron Chapman will speak on Vancouver’s early crime history, particularly in our own backyard of the West End. Afterward, enjoy some wine and cheese, and chatting with the author. Aaron Chapman is a Vancouver writer, historian and musician. His local true crime novels include: The Last Gang in Town; Liquor, Lust and the Law, and Vancouver Vice: Crime and Spectacle in the City’s West End.

PRETEEN YOGA (9 - 12 yrs)

Details: An introduction to yoga where children learn meditation, breathing techniques, mindfulness, and asanas sequences. This is a free introductory class followed, for those interested, by 12 weekly sessions for $144.

RED CROSS BABYSITTING

When: Sun. Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: West End Community Centre Barclay Room
Cost: $75
Details: A nationally recognized program designed to help youth develop self-assurance, knowledge, and skills required for babysitting duties and when caring for themselves alone.

PLAYTIME!

When: Monday through Saturday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. except Wednesdays which are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 22.
Where: The West End Community Centre Auditorium
Admission: $3.50 drop-in per child. Registration required.
Details: Your child will love running, tumbling, riding bikes and cars, and making new friends. Parents are requested to help with set-up and take-down of play equipment.

YOUTH MOVIE NIGHT

When: Thursday, Sept. 21 from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m.

Details:
Open to all ages 13 to 18, with popcorn and movie snacks provided. Pre-registration is encouraged but youth are welcome to register the day of at the front desk.

PRO D-DAY CAMP (5 - 12 yrs)

When: Friday, Sept. 22 (see times below)
Where: West End Community Centre Barclay Room
Cost: Before Care (8 to 9:30 a.m.) $8 / Camp (9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) $35 / After Care (3:30 to 5:30 p.m.) $10.
Details: While the teacher’s away (on Professional Development Day) the kids will play! An action-packed day of exciting activities, crafts, and games. Parents must complete a waiver form.

ZUMBA KIDS (7 - 12 yrs)
Dance With A Hip-Hop Edge

When: Friday, Sept. 22 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Where: West End Community centre Auditorium
Cost: Free Introductory Class
Details: Kids explore a fun fusion of world and Latin styles of dance with a hip hop edge in this high-energy dance-fitness program. Styles include Cumbia, Merengue, Bollywood, Salsa, and more. No experience required. This is a free, introductory class, followed by ten further sessions for those interested for $120. More information here.

  • FAMILY STORY TIME: Thursdays from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at Joe Fortes Library. Free. This program for parents and caregivers with young children shares songs, rhymes and stories. Suitable for children of all ages and abilities to enjoy and learn together.

  • JR. YOUTH LEADERSHIP CLUB: Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 14 through June 13. West End Community Centre Meeting Room 1. Free. Youth in grades 10 to 12 gain leadership and mentoring experience while learning how to organize, plan, and implement programs in the community centre. They also learn valuable skills such as interview preparation, applying to college and university, and how to apply for scholarships and bursaries.   • PRE-TEEN NIGHT AT WECC (ages 9 - 12): Fridays at the West End Community Centre auditorium from 6:15 to 8:45 p.m. through Dec. 15. No sessions Oct 27 and Dec. 1. Free. Youngsters participate in a variety of games, crafts, and activities including dodgeball, button and bracelet making, movie nights, and more. Maximum participation is 30 kids and registration is required.

  • TEEN NIGHT AT COAL HARBOUR: Fridays Sept. 15 through Dec. 15 from 6:15 to 9 p.m. at Coal Harbour Community Centre. A free program for youths in Grades 8 to 12 (ages 13 to 18). Shoot hoops in the gymnasium, play board games upstairs, or get creative with some art supplies. Snacks provided. Teen Night has in-out privileges.

  • SINGLE MOTHERS CONNECTION GROUP: Fridays at Gordon Neighbourhood House from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Free to GNH members — annual membership is $5 and can be purchased at the front counter upon arrival. This program is dedicated to expanding a support system for single mothers in the West End through peer support and building meaningful relationships. As a part of the group, toddler playtimes are aimed at promoting healthy socialization and development of kids ages 0-5. The group also holds monthly workshops, employment support sessions, and community events. To register email familyplace@gordonhouse.org.

Senior Moments

SENIORS FIRST B.C. LAW CLINIC

Where: Kay’s Place in Denman Mall
When: The first Wednesday of every month.
Details: As part of its Satellite Elder Law Clinic program, Seniors First B.C. partners with the West End Seniors’ Network to offer pro bono legal consultations to eligible older adults.

TERRY FOX COMMUNITY WALK

When: Friday, Sept. 15 from 1 to 3 p.m.
Where: Meet at Barclay Manor
Cost: Free.
Details: Walk with your community in honour o Terry’s indomitable spirit and his celebrated Marathon of Hope. The walk will take you from Barclay Manor down Barclay to Lost Lagoon and loop back to the Manor. There will be a stretch session, and refreshments will be provided.

WESN ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Details: The West End Seniors’ Network’s annual opportunity to celebrate achievements, discuss future plans and welcome members’ valuable input. Every member’s presence is pivotal in shaping a vibrant and purposeful future for the organization and its members.

  • FITNESS WITH LAUREN: Tuesdays at 10 a.m. at Gordon Neighbourhood House. Free. A weekly fitness class that incorporates resistance band exercises to improve muscle tone and strength. All seniors welcome.

  • BALLROOM DANCING & SOCIAL: Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m. in the West End Community Centre Auditorium. Join a friendly group of ballroom dances and learn, practice, and meet new friends. Singles and those with partners both welcome. Drop-in $1.50 / Eight sessions for $7.60.

  • YOGA FOR SENIORS: Mondays at 12:15 p.m. at the West End Community Centre Dance Studio. A class for older men and women at all fitness levels, including those with some physical challenges. Each class provides a balanced full body workout, adapted to safely meet your needs. $11 drop-in.

  • CREATIVE QUEST: Thursdays from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at Barclay Manor. The Barclay Manor Artists’ Collective meets for open studio time. Bring your project and supplies to paint with others in a studio setting. No teaching or supplies are given. For information contact Graham at creativequest2022@gmail.com.
