The Vancouver Fringe Festival runs September 5 to 15 at numerous venues around the city, including three productions here in the West End. They are:
THUMBTACKS: Thumbtacks is an original show, devised by the 2019 cohort of the Green Room Theatre Camp. The show features emotional vignettes, powerful monologues and hilarious re-enactments, all mined from the weird walls of the Green Room. Come witness the wacky and wonderful imaginations of this brilliant teenage generation, written, produced, and performed by youth from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. TRY TO REMEMBER: We know how to bring life into this world, but we don’t have a graceful passage for ushering it into the next. This is the story of a life in search of an end, a poignant journey into the realms of dementia performed with pathos, humour and dignity, told through film, dance, and comic and dramatic scenes. THE WOMAN WHO BORROWED MEMORIES: In this one-act chamber opera Stella, an artist, has left her city and traveled abroad to become famous. After a 15-year absence she returns to her old apartment, and her landlady informs her that her room is currently inhabited by an old acquaintance, Wanda. During her visit, Stella realizes that her old room is not enough for Wanda, who also wants Stella’s very memories for her own. The Roedde House Museum’s monthly jazz series moves back into the parlour after a summer outside on the porch, with September’s featured artists are Adam Roberts Thomas (vocals and guitar), Tristan Paxton (guitar) and Paul Rushka (acoustic bass). The Classical Concert Series presents a musical program honouring the German heritage of the Roedde family and taking us back to a late nineteenth century soundscape. Träume und Erinnerung (Dreams and Memory) features works by Straub, Mahler, and Wolf, as well as Wagner’s gorgeous Wesendonck Lieder performed by soprano Catherine Laub and pianist Rita Attrot.

Every Sunday afternoon the folks at the historic St. Andrew’s-Wesley Church at Burrard and Nelson present the finest jazz musicians in the Lower Mainland in an afternoon performance where jazz meets, and dances, with the spirit. The September lineup includes: The Gabriel Palatchi Trio (Sept. 1); Emily Chambers (Sept. 8); Steve Lloyd Smith (Sept. 15); Tony Wilson (Sept 22); and Bill Runge (Sept. 29) . JAZZ ON THE BAY
Every Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday the Sylvia Hotel (1154 Gilford) presents an evening of live jazz in their lounge overlooking English Bay.
The lineup for September includes:
Wednesdays (8 - 10 p.m.): 70s favourites with Taylor James (Sept. 4); rootsy blues and jazz with the Bruce Gerrish Band (Sept. 11); classic jazz with Harriet Clare Goodwin (Sept. 18); and folk and roots with Pernell Reichert (Sept 25).
Thursdays (8 - 10 p.m.): Contemporary jazz with the Allegro Duo (Sept. 5); summertime blues with The Mojo Stars (Sept. 12); blues ballads with the Blue Mistral Quartet (Sept. 19); and French jazz and pop with The Mad Affair (Sept 26).
Sundays (7 - 9 p.m.): Jazzy Pop with Quickness (Sept. 1); jazz crooner Bobby Bacchus (Sept. 8); swing, jazz and R&B with the Blue Velvet Duo (Sept. 15); pop and folk with Nicole Audrey (Sept. 22); and funky jazz with Gabriel Hasselbach (Sept. 29).. And Sundays feature a Prime Rib special!
SAMBA FUSION
Fridays & Saturdays at Rio Brazilian Steakhouse (1122 Denman). Samba Fusion is a Vancouver based Dance Company, whose roots are based in Brazilian Samba, fused with numerous dance styles, music and rhythms. This Multicultural Dance Group performs several styles of dance fusion including: Brazilian Samba, Forro, Samba Reggae, Afro- Brazilian, Hip Hop, African, Polynesian and Burlesque.
