A CAUTIOUS REOPENING AT THE LIBRARY AND COMMUNITY CENTRES
The reopening of Joe Fortes Library and the resumption of limited programming at the Denman Street West End Community Centre, Coal Harbour Community Centre, and Barclay Manor is a hopeful sign for the future.
Joe Fortes has ended its pick-up service, which was put in place when the branch closed due to the COVID crisis and reopened for full service on September 29 and will operate Mondays through Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays from 1 to 8 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Five computer stations will be available for use, and there will be a limit of 14 people in the branch at any time.
The West End Community Centre Association, which operates the Denman Street centre, Coal Harbour Community Centre, and Barclay Manor, has restarted some programming, with all necessary health precautions and a focus on youth, children, and seniors activities.
These include programs such as Zumba for Kids and Pre-Teen Night at the Denman centre, Kid’s Jump Into Music and Ageless Yoga at Coal Harbour, and Watercolour Painting and Yoga For Seniors at Barclay Manor. Office hours at both Denman and Coal Harbour are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Programs will be limited to the main floor rooms and the fitness centre will remain closed until further notice. The arena is scheduled to reopen on October 5.
Kudos to Joe Fortes head librarian Jane Curry and WECCA recreation supervisor Deb Barber and their staffs and programmers for keeping these invaluable community hubs operating during this challenging time.

The long-dormant reader board signage in front of the Denman centre has being refurbished. Keep an eye out for messaging there as we move into October.
