In the News

Haro Street’s Buchan Hotel.

WEST END HOTEL TO HOUSE THE HOMELESS: The West End’s sixty-unit Buchan Hotel on Haro is the city’s first private space to be converted into housing for the homeless because of COVID-19. While the province has chosen not to officially release the name of the hotel, nearby residents have been aware of this move for some days now, and have had discussions about it with workers converting the premises. There is a lack of information from the authorities as to the criteria for placement in the Buchan and the Coal Harbour Community Centre, which was taken over for the same purpose some weeks ago, and the regulations and protocols governing the residents and staff.

We shared a list of questions with contacts at The City of Vancouver (incuding all City Councillors), Atira Women’s Society which is managing the shelter at the Buchan, and BC Housing. You can find those questions here. BC Housing published a document on April 24 titled “COVID-19 Response: Isolation Hotels To Support Those Without A Home” which you can find here.

The West End Journal has been in touch with BC Housing, which is responsible for these sites, for further information and will update our readers as soon as possible.

WEST END FARMERS MARKET UPDATE: The annual West End Farmers Market will open on schedule from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, running through October 24, with special procedures in place to protect vendors and shoppers. There will be a limited number of vendors each week, and control of the numbers of customers coming into the market. There will also be curbside pickup available. Check here for further information and updates.

𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗧 𝗙𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗢𝗩𝗔𝗟: City crews recently removed some of the metal chairs beside the 711 at Comox and Denman. The workers said that the move was to encourage social distancing. In recent weeks, despite social distancing warnings, the seats and tables were often fully occupied. The area has, since the installation of the seats and tables, been a source of numerous complaints about loitering, drinking, and public urination. It has not been confirmed whether the remaining furniture will also be removed, or if the removed furniture will be replaced at some point.

CITY OF VANCOUVER COVID-19 DASHBOARD: The City has launched a dashboard to track emergency response and efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19. It provides a snapshot view of services and will be updated regularly with the latest info. Find it here.

IF IT’S AN EMERGENCY: The head of the ER department at St. Paul’s Hospital Dr. Dan Kalla is urging people with serious or life-threatening health issues not to hesitate to go to ER for fear of contracting the coronavirus. If you have an emergency, go to Emergency. They know how to handle it.

SMELL THE FLOWERS - DON’T PICK THEM: A reader wrote to ask us to remind people to not pick the flowers from other's gardens and selfishly take them home. She had witnessed someone picking some of the yellow flowers from her building’s garden, and saw a couple walking up Cardero after they purposely broke a branch, full of blooms, off a cherry tree. “It is so disheartening that a few selfish people ruin the experience for hundreds of others,” she wrote. Now you’ve been reminded!

COLOUR ME ROBSON: The Vancouver Mural Festival is bringing its know-how to brightening up city businesses boarded up due to COVID-19. They're working with local artists and BIAs to create 40 murals on the shuttered storefronts downtown, along Robson Street, and on South Granville. The images are meant to spark joy, inspire hope, and celebrate resilience, the group said today, in an announcement that the first wave of works would start this past week. VMF stresses that City of Vancouver COVID-19 social distancing rules remain in effect and all artists will be following health and safety regulations. That means the best way to follow the progress of the murals will be to follow the hashtag #makeartwhileapart via the @vanmuralfest Instagram and Facebook

WE ARE TOGETHER: Playing on its stylized wordmark logo, the West End Business Improvement Association (WEBIA) has launched a new program and they’re looking for your input. Each week they will be revealing a new word/phrase that reflects our community, beginning with WE, and they will be offering opportunities for you to make suggestions and share WE stories about getting through this pandemic together. And there will be prizes!  Details here, and share your thoughts with Kelsey at k.malden@westendbia.com.

THE POWER OF PORTRAITS: Participate in The Power of Portraits project - a citizen-led initiative to reclaim boarded-up storefronts as canvases to share stories of resilience & reinforce community connection. More information here.

Margaret, the Queen of Barclay Street. (Bill Richardson Photo)

HAPPY 102nd BIRTHDAY MARGARET!: A long-time West End fixture and frequently seen taking the air on Barclay Street, Margaret celebrated her 102nd birthday April 28. CONCERN FOR ROBSON STREET’S FUTURE: The Robson Street Business Association’s executive director Teri Smith has expressed her concerns about the future of the popular and high-end West End retail strip in an interview with Business In Vancouver, which you can find here.

RESTAURANTS FEELING THE PINCH FROM DELIVERY APPS: As reported by CTV here, restaurants are finding that fees to various delivery services are taking too big a cut out of their profit margins. West End restaurateur Fiona Grieve, the owner of Buckstop on Denman is quoted as saying “I feel like (the apps) are exploiting restaurants at a time when their business has drastically increased.” Like many West End restaurants, Buckstop is offering a discount for pick-up / take-out orders. Find The West End Journal’s list of West End-Coal Harbour restaurants providing deliver options here.

From Your Government(s)

THE OFFICIAL BC GOVERNMENT COVID-19 PAGE: MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert has flagged for us the current, and frequently updated, provincial government page providing information and support. You’ll find it here.

GOVERNMENT DIRECTIVES ARE “NOT SUGGESTIONS” … THEY ARE THE LAW! The provincial government has announced that all municipal state of emergency proclamations are suspended and all emergency measures will now be implemented under the provincial edict. There are now orders in place regarding social distancing and assembly which, if violated, will result in fines. These are not suggestions, they are now the law.

EVICTIONS & FORECLOSURES: An announcement was made Monday, March 23 by the Premier and Finance Minister to the effect that relief was coming shortly for renters caught in a bind. The announced $5 billion aid package includes $2.8 billion for individuals and services and $2.2 billion for businesses. Evictions, except for health and safety reasons, and rent increases are now frozen by order of the provincial government. West Enders thank our MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert for his work on this file.

TRACKING THE NUMBERS: Our MP Dr. Hedy Fry has shared this link to an interactive map tracking the numbers of infections, recoveries, and deaths, province-by-province.

with Frequent Updates

BC LIQUOR STORE HOURS: It has been widely and erroneously reported that the provincial government has extended the hours of its liquor stores. This is not the case. All BC Liquor Store locations continue to restrict their hours to from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and are closed on Sundays. The lifting of restricted hours applies only to privately owned outlets, which may, at their own discretion, open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. In the West End Marquis Wine Cellars on Davie Street are, like the government outlets, open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. but are also open on Sundays. Cheers!

NOTE TO CYCLISTS: While vehicular traffic is now banned from Stanley Park, the folks at the West End-Coal Harbour Community Policing Centre would like to remind you that the 30km/h speed limit is in effect for cyclists. So slow down, obey traffic calming measures & yield to pedestrians. Ride safe & stay far apart!

STANLEY PARK RESTRICTIONS: In addition to the previously announced closure of Stanley Park Drive to all vehicles, the Vancouver Park Board has announced that the Seawall is now closed to bikes. Details here. Beach Avenue is also closed to eastbound vehicle traffic from Hornby to Stanley Park and the No. 23 Beach bus will be diverted to Davie Street. The new Park Champions, in right green vests, are out reminding the public of the importance of physical distancing.

RENT RELIEF: The provincial Temporary Rental Supplement has been announced, and you can access the application here. And remember, no evictions (except in exceptional circumstances) or rent increases are allowed at this time.

STANLEY PARK ONLINE PROGRAMS: The Stanley Park Ecology Society is moving many of its educational programs online. Check here for information listed in their events calendar.

PERMIT PARKING RESUMES: The City of Vancouver has resumed enforcement of permit-only parking zones in the West End as a measure to further encourage people to remain in their own neighbourhoods. Metered parking has also been reinstated west of Burrard.

HARLEY HOUSE SOLD FOR $52 MILLION: A West End rental tower at 1230 Nelson has a new owner. Goodman Commercial Inc. announced Sunday (April 4) the sale of Harley House, a 21-storey concrete apartment building constructed in 1971. According to details made available by Mark Goodman of Goodman Commercial Inc., Harley House has 107 rental suites. The $52 million price tag translates to $485,981 per unit. Information about the purchase was not immediately available.

WEST END FOOD BANK CLOSED: FOOD BANK CLOSED: The food bank previously held at Gordon Neighbourhood House, which reportedly had a client list of about 400, has been closed by the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. They are now referring everyone to the new centralized Food Bank at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. This is not good news for those who are dependent on this service and may have problems travelling to the theatre and back.

A ROUND OF APPLAUSE: West Enders have launched a new tradition, launched by Rory Richardson of the Facebook page Vancouver West Enders (see their link below) — every evening at 7 p.m. our neighbours are taking to their balconies and windows to share a round of applause in appreciation for the essential workers in our community who are staying calm and carrying on. The grocery store clerks, the bus drivers, the medical personnel, and everyone else who is keeping the essential wheels of our society turning. Kudos to the West Ender, near Chilco and Pendrell, who has been joining the love-in by playing his bagpipes from his balcony. Show a little love! Find COVID Applause Vancouver for some great videos here. The CBC recently ran a story about how a West Ender launched this new tradition, and you can find it here.

VOLUNTEER DELIVERY SERVICE: Many food and drug outlets are offering free delivery, but not all. A local firm, Premier Automation and Design, a family-owned business with a 20-year track record in Vancouver, is making its staff available, at no charge. The service is available daily from 7 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Call 604.996.3338.

BUS SERVICE: All Vancouver bus service is now free to everyone (Skytrain, Seabus, and West Coast Express not included). Entry is through the rear doors to protect the drivers. There have been frequent trip cancellations on the 5/6 West End route, so if you must travel by transit you can sign up here for transit route alerts and be notified of cancellations and delays on your route.

BAD ADVICE GOING ‘ROUND: If you have seen the voice clip making the rounds on Facebook and Twitter that includes suggestions for drinking lots of water and other coronavirus management advice, was it. This has been debunked and is a distraction. An online company called NRP Organics has been distributing flyers in Metro Vancouver claiming their herbal product protects against the coronavirus. It doesn’t.
