NEW SCHOOL PLANNING
After over 25 years of speculation, the planning process for building a new King George Secondary School along with a new West End Community Centre has finally entered public engagement.
You may notice suggestion boxes and planning engagement stations around KG. Most of us can recognize the major issues with the 1960’s era structure, including the fact it is seismically unsafe. So please, leave your suggestions and thoughts.
The Dragon’s Pen caught up with some people depositing their suggestions to see what they wanted from a new school.
Robin Kobe, a grade 12 student suggested a bigger fitness centre, with more airflow and opportunities for students to work out before and after school, or during a free block with no questions asked from the teachers.
Another grade 12 student, Tristian Belsey, suggested a safe bike room and a proper outdoor hangout/eating area as he said the lunchroom is “filled with annoying grade eights”.
Max Coomrie, also a grade 12 student, suggested bigger bathrooms that don’t look like a “boomers paradise” citing the outdated interior.
At least seven people suggested bigger classrooms and less overcrowding, a big problem during breaks.
POST-SECONDARY APPLICATIONS
If you are currently in grade 12, you can now send out your application to a post-secondary institution. The councillors and admin team have posted multiple links in the school’s Microsoft Teams announcement channel.
If you have any questions or need some help, feel free to talk to a student counsellor.
SKI CLUB
The Ski/Snowboard Club is back after a brief absence last year. Hosted by Mr. Kid, a former ski bum at Sunshine Village in Banff, the club will be a mix of recreational skiing along with some competitive portions with other schools.
Some skiing/snowboarding experience is required, and you must be familiar with the Ski Code of Conduct.
A home mountain for our ski club has not been selected yet, however please note that proof-of-vaccination may be required for some mountains including Grouse.
REMEMBRANCE DAY
As we do every year, “The Dragon’s Pen” would like to take this opportunity to remember and thank the many King George students who fought in the two World Wars. Many paid the ultimate sacrifice for the greater good of our country.
A memorial for the KG students who went overseas is in the school’s foyer, to the right of the Archives display.
