Celebrating 35 In Business!
A popular and thriving West End business, the Quick Nickel clothing store is celebrating its 35th year, a remarkable success story of a resilient, female-owned, local small business.
In 1989, then 24-year-old Lisa Arthurs founded the original location of the Quick Nickel at 917 Denman Street, today’s home of the Aarm Dental Group. Back then it was one in a row of small businesses across from the West End Community Centre, including ballet legend Consuelo Torey’s lingerie shop, a mother and son owned dry cleaners, and the non-profit import business Ten Thousand Villages.
Lisa, who loved fashion and great deals, had no idea what a big undertaking it would be. With very little business training, she fearlessly took on the challenge.
Lisa discovered a special niche in this beloved neighborhood, building a loyal customer base, many of whom became friends. The store became a staple in the community, offering a safe and inclusive space for all.
The Quick Nickel is known for offering fashion-forward and budget-friendly clothing. Lisa brings in high-quality brands for both essentials and quirky pieces.
In 1997, the Quick Nickel moved to 1778 Davie Street, and in 2019 moved again to its current location at 1736 Davie. The business adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic, building an online presence.
In 2022, Lisa brought on a partner, Kevin Millikin, a 25-year customer and dear friend.
Lisa, who is turning 60 this year, also raised her son while running the store, often bringing him along to suppliers and the store.
Lisa and staff are known for consistently providing top-notch customer service, always trying to make the community the best it can be. Lisa has been a member of the West End Business Improvement Association board of directors for many years, and has served a couple of terms as board chair.
The West End Journal’s editor and publisher Kevin Dale McKeown adds … “I bought a denim coat at The Quick Nickel shortly after they opened on Denman in 1989. It’s been my Spring and Autumn coat ever since. It shows no wear and tear except that the button holes are a bit frayed! A couple of times recently I’ve worn it into the store and asked about a refund — and we’ve all had a good laugh! Talk about quality and budget friendly — I think I paid $20 for the coat. What do you have in your wardrobe that’s lasted you 35 years?”
Congratulations Lisa!
