Community Calendar
STANDARD FIRST AID / CPR/ AED
When: Saturday, July 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: The West End Community Centre / Barclay Room.
Cost: $140.
Details: This comprehensive course offers first aid and CPR/AED skills for those who need training due to work requirements, or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies at home. The course meets legislation requirements for provincial worker safety and insurance boards, and includes the latest first aid and CPR guidelines.
COMMUNITY LEARNING KITCHEN
When: Tuesdays, July 9, 16, and 23 from 6 to 9 p.m.
Where: Gordon Neighbourhood House.
Cost: None. A $50 honorarium is paid upon participation.

INTRODUCTION TO SEED SAVING
When: Thursday, July 11 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Where: Coal Harbour Community Centre Arts & Crafts Room.
Cost: $20.
Details: If you’d like to start saving your own seeds, this is the perfect time of year to start thinking about it. THis joint Village Vancouver and West End Neighbourhood Food Network Urban Garden Club workshop, Rhiannon Johnson will provide you with the knowledge needed to understand the basic pricples behind seed saving and the skills necessary to get started. Children 12 and over are welcome and must be accompanied by an adult. Reduced fee for Seniors (50+).
WEST END COMMUNITY CLEAN—UP
When: Saturday, July 13 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon
Where: Meet at Gordon Neighbourhood House
Cost: Free. Register here.
Details: It’s your neighbourhood, and you’re invited to get together as a community to help keep the neighbourhood clean as you and your neighbours clear area of accumulated trash. There will be a free hot breakfast or BBQ to keep you going and door prizes drawn at 12 noon. Places going fast, so register now.
WEST END SAFETY FAIR
When: Saturday, July 13 from 12 noon to 3 p.m.
Where: 1100 Block Jervis Street
Cost: Free.
Details: Folks at the West End-Coal Harbour Community Policing Centre will host an afternoon of information on keeping our community safe, offering free safety devices, bike registration, Child Find Ids, live music, and games and prizes. The Vancouver Police Department’s Mounted Unit will be on hand — officers and horses! More information here.
HARM REDUCTION & NALOXONE TRAINING
When: Tuesday, July 23 at 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Where: Gordon Neighbourhood House Room 1.
Cost: Free. Capacity limited to 25. Reserve your spot here.
Details: Naloxone is a life-saving medication used in response to an opioid overdose. Learning how to use it can be a valuable way to contribute to your neighbourhood's safety. In this workshop, facilitated by Health Initiative for Men (HIM) you will learn about Vancouver's history of drugs and harm reduction and acquire essential skills to care for the people in our community. All participants will receive a free Naloxone kit.
WEST END GARDEN CLUB
When: Thursday, July 25 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Where: The West End Community Centre Barclay Room.
Cost: Free.
Details: Join the West End Neighbourhood Network’s Urgban Garden Club and Village Vancouver at their monthly, family friendly gathering. Each month will feature a short presentation or divusiion on a differend food and/0r gardening topic. The community seed library will be on hand for you to pick up some free seeds for your garden, and swap or donate seeds. Optionally, bring some snacks to share. Children of any age are welcome, and must be accompanied by an adult.
COMMUNITY LUNCH
When: Mondays and Fridays at 12 noon.
Where: Gordon Neighbourhood House (GNH)
Cost: $7.50 with a GNH membership, $8 without. Children 1 and up are half-price.

TOASTMASTERS: Tuesdays, from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. until June 25 in the West End Community Centre’s Bidwell Room. Free. Learn and practice public speaking, impromptu speeches, and leadership skills at this weekly meeting.
ENGLISH CONVERSATION CIRCLE: Tuesdays through June 8, in the West End Community Centre’s Meeting Room 2. Free. Join a weekly conversation and drop in when you can to practice English in a relaxed circle of friendly people. Conversations are guided by experienced facilitators who strive to talk about things that interest you.
WEST END WRITERS: Wednesdays, from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m until Dec. 13. Free. Writers Club of all ages and experience are invited to join in reading works-in-progress and receiving feedback. Visit here for more information.
CRIBBAGE: Fridays, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. until Dec. 15, in the West End Community Centre’s Bidwell Room. Free. A friendly social card group sharing a fun game. Beginners and newcomers welcome. The Dec. 1 class will be in the English Bay Room.
FARMER'S MARKET on Comox (between Thurlow and Bute) every Saturday through October 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Stock up on fresh fruit and veggies for tasty summer meals and picnics at the beach.
WATERFRONT WALKERS: Saturdays, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m until Dec. 16. Free. A casual group of walking enthusiasts who meet weekly to enjoy a variety of scenic walks. Routes are regularly around 6km and last about three hours, with a stop along the way for coffee. Meet up at Coal Harbour Community Centre.
THE DARK SECRETS OF STANLEY PARK: Saturdays from 4 to 5:30/6 p.m. $32 for adults and $29 for youth and seniors. Information and tickets here. Discover the jaw-dropping beauty – and sinister stories – of Stanley Park. Behind those majestic forests, picturesque gardens, and stunning beaches lies a history of forced evictions, buried treasure, shocking crime scenes, and the macabre tale of Deadman’s Island. When you buy a ticket for this walking tour, two per cent of the ticket cost goes to support the Indian Residential School Survivors Society.
LABYRINTH - A WALKING MEDITATION: Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at St. Paul’s Anglican Church Hall. Free. The Labyrinth is a full 13-metre replica of the medieval labyrinth laid in the stone floor of the 13th-century Cathédrale de Notre-Dame de Chartres. The Labyrinth at St. Paul’s is open for silent walking, prayer and meditation to people of all faiths and spiritual disciplines as a resource for meditation, reflection, and prayer.

THEATRE UNDER THE STARS
“Cats” and “School of Rock”

Details: Vancouver’s beloved outdoor theatre each summer presents two shows in repertory, this year featuring one of the longest running Broadway musicals, Cats and School of Rock, based on the hit 2003 film, School of Rock is a high-voltage, feel-good tribute to big dreams, coming together, and the irrepressible power of rock ‘n roll!
ROCKIN’ IN THE PARK
When: Saturday, July 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Coal Harbour Park.
Cost: Free.
Details: An annual fun-raiser with live entertainment, carnival games, a bouncy castle, face painting, a youth fundraiser, community information and activity booths, and much, much more. In the event of rain the event will be moved indoors to the Coal Harbour Community Centre.
SYMPHONY AT SUNSET
When: Saturday, July 6 from 8 to 9:30 p.m.
Where: Sunset Beach Park
Cost: Free
Details: The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra returns to Sunset Beach for what has become a beloved annual tradition. This year’s performance will feature well-known music from hit films such as Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, and E.T., as well as a selection of classical favourites. Conducted by the VSO's music director Otto Tausk, the concert will begin with an orchestral arrangement of the Coast Salish Anthem, a piece gifted to the VSO by the grandson of the late Chief Dan George.
Attendees are encouraged to walk, bike, or take public transportation to Symphony at Sunset. A bike valet and bike racks will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Bicycles are not permitted on the field. Parking in the area is very limited, so if driving is necessary, consider parking in Stanley Park and walking to the event site. Arrive early and allow plenty of time to find parking.
Road closures will include:
Thurlow St, between Pacific and Beach, will be closed from 4 pm–10 pm
Beach Ave, between Thurlow and Jervis, will be closed from 7 pm–11 pm
Bute St, between Pacific and Beach, will be closed from 7 pm–11 pm
The event grounds will be open all day for picnickers to set up early, as space will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendees are encouraged to bring low chairs to avoid obstructing the view of other audience members. An accessible viewing area will be located on the south side of the event grounds.
Several food trucks will be parked throughout the grounds and the Sunset Beach Concession stand will be open late. Online ordering at Sunset Beach Concession is available here.
LIVE IN THE PARLOUR
Music at Roedde House Museum
When: Sunday, July 14 from 2 to 3 p.m.
Cost: $10 General / $5 Youth 18 and under Free for Children 5 and under and RHM members.
Details: Roedde House welcomes back the Jenny Pluck Pears ensemble with their folksy and whimsical tunes. Jenny Pluck Pears is a women folk ensemble playing a mix of traditional, ancient, and modern tunes and songs, with vocals, mandolin, guitar, and recorders.
EVO SUMMER CINEMA
Outdoor Movies In Stanley Park

CELEBRATION OF LIGHT

Details: The annual Celebration of Light will fire up the skies above English Bay for another international fireworks competition. July 20 will showcase Portugal, July 24 will be Malaysia’s turn, and July 27 will feature the United Kingdom.
JAZZ IN COAL HARBOUR PARK

Where: Coal Harbour Park / Grassy area on top of the Community Centre.

Details: The first of a three performance music series presented by the Coal Harbour Residents Association in collaboration with Part of the Tribe Collective. This month’s event features the Joe Abbott Group.
The rest of the series features the Dylan Cramer Trio on August 1 and Momosa on August 8. Bring your family and friends, a blanket, a picnic snack, and enjoy the music.

FAMILY STORY TIME: Thursdays from 11:15 to 11:45 at Joe Fortes Library. Free. This program for parents and caregivers with young children shares songs, rhymes and stories. Suitable for children of all ages and abilities to enjoy and learn together.
SINGLE MOTHERS CONNECTION GROUP: Fridays at Gordon Neighbourhood House from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Free to GNH members — annual membership is $5 and can be purchased at the front counter upon arrival. This program is dedicated to expanding a support system for single mothers in the West End through peer support and building meaningful relationships. As a part of the group, toddler playtimes are aimed at promoting healthy socialization and development of kids ages 0-5. West End Living Library - Naomi Steinberg. Friday, July 5 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. In 2015, Naomi Steinberg completed a 382 day adventure, covering 55,965 kilometres around the world by road and rail, land and sea, performing a playful and profound one-woman show called Goosefeather Naomi will share the ups and downs of an extraordinary year of global travel.
Friday Movie - Homebody. Friday, July 5 ⋅1:30 to 3 p.m. Colby Minifie stars in this lighthearted, genderqueer fantasy comedy about a curious young boy who gets to live as a woman for a day when he sends his spirit into his babysitter’s body... and awkwardness ensues.

Qu Biologics Resilience Study Seminar. Thursday, July 11 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Dr. Hal Gunn, MD, CEO of Qu Biologics will present “The Immune System and Aging”. This talk will describe how immune function declines with age, a process known as immunosenescence. Dr. Gunn will discuss the different factors influencing immune function, and holistic approaches to support immunity as one ages. The talk will conclude with an overview of a new clinical study designed to evaluate whether a new immunmodulator can improve natural immune function and health in adults age 65 years or older.
How to Grow Your Own Herbs. Friday, July 12 from 11 to 11:50 a.m. Join Deanna Henry, owner of Garden Health and a two-spirited LGBTQ+ Indigenous woman from the Skeetchestn band, for a workshop on growing your own herbs. Deanna, who is dedicated to helping her community live healthy and long lives, will guide you in cultivating your own herb garden.
UBC Study: The Power of Art. Friday, July 12 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The Power of the Arts Study is looking for older adults to participate in a study involving the arts and social interaction. We want to see how listening to familiar music, spoken, word, or spending time with a close friend or relative may improve different areas of your life such as your cognition, mood, or quality of life.

Monday, July 15 from 3 to 5 p.m. Join Kristian Hildebrandt from the City of Vancouver's Accessibility Department to learn about the Leisure Access Pass (LAP) program. BALLROOM DANCING & SOCIAL: Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m. in the West End Community Centre Auditorium. Join a friendly group of ballroom dances and learn, practice, and meet new friends. Singles and those with partners both welcome. Drop-in $1.50 / Eight sessions for $7.60.
YOGA FOR SENIORS: Mondays at 12:15 p.m. at the West End Community Centre Dance Studio. A class for older men and women at all fitness levels, including those with some physical challenges. Each class provides a balanced full body workout, adapted to safely meet your needs. $11 drop-in.
BE WELL: Wednesdays through June 19 at the West End Community Centre Bidwell Room from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Free. A weekly drop-in for West End seniors where, in a comfortable social atmosphere, blood pressure checks, fitness breaks, and seminars on a variety of wellness topics are offered. Monthly schedules are available at the WECC front desk.
TED TALKS & DISCUSSION: Thursdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Barclay Manor. A lively gathering for informative talks and ensuing discussions.
CREATIVE QUEST: Tuesdays from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at Barclay Manor. The Barclay Manor Artists’ Collective meets for open studio time. DRAG ME TO HELL! Thursdays at 11:30 p.m. An evening of killer drag hosted by Miss Understood and featuring a revolving cast of special guest performers and music by Dj Amy Grindhouse. Admission $12 in advance (here) and $15 at the door.
UNITY FRIDAY: At The Junction. Showtime 11 p.m. Service until 4 a.m. Hosted each week by a variety of queer community members. $15 cover. Music by DJ Dennis Kindel.
THE REALLY GAY HISTORY TOUR: Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. It’s time for Vancouver’s secrets to come out of the closet. Tour guide Glenn Tkach tells the stories of drag kings and two spirit warriors, queer church ministers ,and transgender crime fighters. This two-hour walking tour is a celebration of the unsung heroes who forever changed the social fabric of our city. $32 for adults and $29 for youth and seniors. Information and tickets here.
